Track Name: They Kicked Me Out Of The Empire, Mama
At the city end of the block,
At the pointy ended stick,
There’s a place where we were carpenters.
There’s an empire where we lived.
There’s no money in the rent box.
And there’s a letter on the fridge.
There’s a man who wants us out of here,
There’s a place where we can stick…

…All of our stuff
As though our lives mean nothing.
We had supposed that destination
Would never die.
That hallowed scene,
That simple life
Would take a little more then hammering and
Arguments to keep on all the lights.
Now we drink to spoiled wine.

The last tram screams ‘round the corner
And disappears into the air.
Someone else is on the balcony,
Same state of disrepair.
There are houses where the walls come down
And half the bands have broken up
And an Englishman will sing
“There’s a girl I’ll spend my winters with
And file memories under…

…All our stuff
Now that our lives mean something.”
All of your cold investigation
Could work out fine.
We had a scene,
A simple life.
We’ll take small comfort in the memory of Elgin St
And everyone inside.
Now we live on borrowed time.

Saw my buddies at the corner pub.
“Haven’t seen you guys on years…”
Track Name: Gethsemane
All the pretty horses ride along the freeway
And suffer on the corner of treading water, Silkwood Way.
Tell me do your roses battle with your orchids?
Everything will end this way. She know’s I’ll
Be the little fish that dives upon the open lake.

It looks like I’m ok, settled on the green this way.
To disappear would take no time.

I miss every deadline waiting for a slow dive.
I need to, it’s autumn and
Buried in a black book everything would turn out right if I could
Tear your temples down.

They tell me things change.
The babies on the way, we’ll never be the same.
All the pretty horses ride along the tidal way and I would
Tear your temples down.

Every single fleet foot business man is running late and I am
Waiting on a satellite.

It looks like I’m ok, settled on the green this way.
To disappear would take no time.
The waves are on the way so tell me are you
Scared by all this change?

The babies on the way.
It kills me still the way that things have changed.
Her hair would bleach to grey and then it’s over.
Her letters read the same,
It’s always with the sting of sweet dismay.
The photos all have faded off the wall.

All the pretty horses ride along the skyline,
Take readings from the bible and
Finally sing it
“Holy Holy!!’
Track Name: Monuments
Hark the monolith.
Feel the temperature rising.
See, the pressure is mounting,
An abacus counting in hundreds
And thousands, falling.

Heed the criminal
Leaving the tenement building.
See the teeth-marks of time,
Map the risk. Mark the lines
On the landscape, there’s an army forming.

And it feels like forever ‘til we
Find an answer.
And it feels like the question burns our lips.

Reap the benefits.
Seems like I read it in The Age.
Buildings are burning like paper
So do me a favour and forget me,
Forget my story.

And it moves so effortlessly,
Like a dancer.
I can see smoke billowing already.

It’s like when you were a spy
And you said “Meet me in the cross-hairs.
On the last day of July.
I'm leaving.”
You said “Don’t look to your right.”
As I was standing at the station
Too drunk to take to the sky.
With that look in your eye
You said “No ceremony please.”
You’re like an orchestra of bees
And it’s like I read it in the age.

Hark the monument
Whereby I wait for you for days.
Tourists are capturing pictures
While bums quote from scripture
And my ticket goes one way baby.
It’s like I read it in the age.
It’s like I read it in the age.
It’s like I read it in the age.

It’s like when you were a spy
And you said “Meet me in the cross-hairs.
On the last day of July.
Fuck it, I'm leaving.”
You said “Don’t look to your right.”
As I was standing at the station
Too drunk to take to the sky.
With that look in your eye
You said “No ceremony please.”
You’re like an orchestra of bees
And it’s like I read it in the age.

The wolves are at the door,
There’s cameras in the ceiling and the floor.
It’s not safe anymore,
I've turned the whole thing over.
The new world calls my name.
I hate it when you look at me that way…
Track Name: You'll Be Smoke
Here’s a fine thing, all-sentimental.
Close my eyes though I'm not asleep.
I'm on fire, nervous as hell.
Slow, distracted and sallowing.

Shows glow blindly. All their blue ether
Is gloaming cast upon my face.
The moon dripped honey. Not now, it’s slowing.
I'm afraid to be alone and you’re walking toward the fire escape.

I'm afraid you’ll be smoke as you billow toward the exit.
The exit.
The exit.
The exit.
The exit.
I can feel the arrows of St Anthony’s ascension.
I'm afraid to be smoke as you billow toward the end.
Track Name: Drunk Letter
She said “You don’t deserve to be happy!”
And I cowered ‘cos she always knew best.
“Dreams are not concrete, they’re like dust and they are at the mercy
Of the breeze.” As I deflated
Clutching at my chest. The she said
“Sing me a song of your longing.”
And I whispered it ‘cos yelling hurt my head.
“Paint me a picture, paint me springtime, paint with brighter colours.
Brighter than you ever will again.”

Pulling up pins, I drove around on your skin.
I cut a switch from the tree in The Garden of Eden.
Lump in your throat, I’ll be a thorn in your side.
I’ll die a thousand times over before
I feel alive by myself.

She said “Now you deserve to be lonely”
As I whimpered I hit nails on their heads.
“So few find comforting what most of us call instinct.”
And with that she stood up silently and left.

Found out you lied, I found out you were unwell,
So I took a second job to concentrate on your health.
Christ I conceded that like Christ I believed you
And I begged you to stab me before I did it myself.
Lit up like Christmas at the end of a summer
That bought nothing but rain.
Now your eyelids wont close anymore.

She said “Now you deserve to be happy.”
And I smiled ‘cos I always knew best.
